The Sweden Life

Following Jessica's adventures in Sweden, the home of pop!

Tuesday, August 24, 2004

Now it really is Tuesday and I am happy cos I have my PJ mag (which is extremely good!), Darren's video is doing better, Natasha B IS no.1, I spotted Mark from V on the Smash Hits! cover (well, it's a start...) and I can sleep late without interruption from snoring or trains. However, the bad news is Usher and Jessica Simpson have new videos out, the Cheeky Girls are getting lots of play and Train have gone proper rock. Why can't our charts have 2 songs in Moldovan in the top 3? Now I want to know where Maroon 5 are in the midweeks, what important pop gossip I've missed and what happened in One Tree Hill (it didn't record, grrr!). It's exciting to be back but I'll still be listening to Swedish radio this evening and downloading all my top holiday tunes.

Today is again Mandag and therefore my last day in Sweden. We spent today in the country's 4th biggest town, Uppsala, where I finally purchased some Moomin memorabilia. I am a big fan of the Moomins so I was excited to find they're as big as Winnie The Pooh here. There's even a Moomin Valley museum in Stockholm.

Now I am back in England and it is nearly Tuesday, but sadly not Tisdag. I am sad to leave Sweden and it's supreme aceness, but but very excited to return to all the equally ace things at home. I realised I haven't listened to Annie or Love Machine or anything by V all week!

It's now Sondag (Sunday) and most of today was spent driving around the coast and visiting beaches and such, which were very nice to see but extremely coldand windy. I did get to listen to lots of Swedish radio including the Hitlistan (top 10), on which I can report Haiducci (yesterday's finale) are no.1 with their version of Dragostea Din Tei. O-zone are no.3 with their version of the same song and other ace songs in the chart include Jimmy Jansson - Som Sommaren, Raymond & Maria - Ingen Vill Veta Var Du Köpt Din Tröja and E-type - Olympia.

It is now Lorsdag (Saturday) and I can say that NRJ In The Park was well worth all my excitement! It was held in the main square (Kunstradgarden, or something like that) in Stockholm and it was a lovely hot and sunny day. The show began with mainly small Swedish acts such as Superboy and Moe, but Da Buzz and Dhani (A-teen gone solo) were both good. Then I moved around to the other side and spotted the entrance to the backstage area, where stars were arriving and meeting fans. I saw Tess and Magnus from Alcazar, Gunther and the Sunshine Girls, the lovely Linda from Lambretta and Rachel Stevens and I waited for Darren but he got straight into his car. Darren, Alcazar, Lambretta, Ana and Natasha Bedingfield were the best performances. Hopefully Natasha is no.1 at home by now! She was the only English act who made any attempt to speak Swedish. Estelle asked people to put their hands up if they were born in the 1980s which most of the crowd clearly were, but the Swedes all looked around confused. She also sang her next single which sounds like even a video starring Lemar, Natasha B and Ms Dynamite won't save it. Here's a weird story: While getting hotdogs during Snook's performance of Mister Cool on Thursday I spotted an older Asian man in the queue to meet the stars singing along to all the words, then later I was amused to see him on stage winning a pink heart-shaped guitar. Then today I was watching Dhani on a big screen by the stage and guess who I saw in the front row? The very same man! I also bumped into him several more times this afternoon. It seems I have an elderly, pop-obsessed Swedish stalker to add to my collection. Funnily enough, this is not the first time I have been stalked by an A-teens fan in a foreign country. Very scary! I wouldn't like to think what might happen if I actually bought their CD.

Today is Fredag (Friday) and I have been to an open-air museum/zoo called Skansen. There were lots of houses, farms, shops etc. to look around that were set out as they would have been a century or so ago and the zoo part had bears, meese (plural of moose) and many other animals found in Scandinavia. It was really big so I'm exhausted, but still have the energy to say how excited I am about seeing Darren, Alcazar etc. at NRJ tomorrow.

It is Thursday evening and I have to tell you the very exciting thing that happened! At Grona Lund (the theme park) it was Okej Dagen. Okej is a pop music magazine in Sweden and this was their summer pop gig, so I got to watch all kinds of Swedish pop stars. Some were rubbish (Miio, Cosmo4), but others were truly ace, such as Melody Club, Ana and Brolle Jr. Also there was Jimmy Jansson (pronounced Yimmy Yansson), who was on Fame Factory and the big teen pop boy right now, and looking very Will-ish with a fashion mullet and a velvety blazer. When he came on all the teenage girls in the crowd (including several in home-made Jimmy t-shirts) went crazy and when he came out to sign autographs, there was a fangirl stampede. It was Jimmy-mania!

Some photos of the stars of Okej Dagen - Jimmy Jansson, Melody Club (he was actually wearing that very outfit!) and Brolle Jr:

It is Onsdag (Wednesday) evening and I am listening to my new CDs - Alcazarised, Lambretta and The Whole Shebang, each of which only cost about £6! It took me ages to find the Alcazar one as that was the only Alcazar album is any shop in Stockholm - they are all sold out! I still haven't found their brand new album, Dancefloor Deluxe, anywhere! Now it is Tursdag/Thursday and I've just been to look at an old town nearby and soon we are going to Grona Lund (Green Land), and amusement park in Stockholm. My mum has just gone to McDonalds to buy a salad - it's only downstairs from here and our nearest shop. I have managed to only eat there once, luckily, as I can't bear much of their food. I have noticed a lot of buff hotties in Sweden, the average good looking-ness of people is much higher than the UK, particularly as it is more common for boys to have long hair than short and along with their general fairness, this is excellent. It's even better than the airport here! Other unusual things in Sweden are they have pick'n'mix everything in the supermarkets and caviar by the tills, the cost of parking is enormous and they don't seem to have a proper tv guide magazine. Also, wherever you go in Stockholm you see painted cows in all sorts of styles - even an astronaut cow and one with antlers to look like a moose, Sweden's national animal.

Today is Tuesday aka Tisdag. My Dad has gone to get food (how he can take so long when the shop is directly below us I have no idea) and I am watching old episodes of Fame Factory. They were singing an old Maltese Eurovision entry, in Swedish! Soon I am going into Stockholm to look around the medieval part of the town and see what it there for us to do the rest of the week.

Monday, August 16, 2004

It is 5:20am and so far the only Swedish I know is 'Mandag' (luckily it is Monday today) and 'lyssna' (listen), which will be useful for yelling at any annoying Swedes. I am surprisingly hyper for this time of day, but I do seem to thrive on tiredness. The excitement may also be cos I am going to SWEDEN - HOME OF POP! Or cos I am in the midst of my very own V Festival, much better than the real one because despite not being presented by Simon Amstell, it does actually involve V - lots of V! I had a last watch of my V DVD this morning including my favourite bit in the interview:
Q: What is the weirdest thing you can do with your body?
Mark: I can do an impression of a plum tree.
Aaron: With your BODY Mark!
Mark: Oh...
Which is a rather weird answer in itself. I've also been listening, rather appropriately, to Travel Girl by Hitch Hike. No sleep, no problem - Reading sunrise, I'm out.

Now I am at the airport and so far I have spotted 33 buff hotties and one man with a "trolleyed" t-shirt, which is more amusing than it's owner even imagined when you misread it as "troll eyed". Coincidentally, they have a troll shop in Stockholm, but I don't think I'll be visiting it. My mum says she feels sick from standing still too long in the check-in queue. How will she cope on a plane?!

I am now IN SWEDEN!! Everything is going well so far. Buff hottie no. 34 (I counted 36 in total - airports are THE best place for BH spotting) sat next to us on the plane. He was wearing an ace hat and had a scar under his eye so it looked like he had recently had it replaced. Perhaps he had to sell the original to get the money to fly home! He also had a pillow in his hand luggage which we decided was his 'snuggly' (ie. comfort pillow). Now I am in the hired car driving (well, my Dad is) to Stockholm. It is scary as we are on the wrong (or technically, right) side of the road and the car is weird too, so my Dad's usually good driving has gone a bit loony. We are listening to Swedish radio (Rix FM) and I heard a bit of the ace new Da Buzz song and a song in Swedish (I guess) which sounded like Peter Andre but worse! So not quite everything is better in Sweden.

I am sat on my bed listening to Rix FM and waiting for a programme about Melodifestivalen to come on. Our apartments are above a shopping centre, meaning I have already been in a CD shop! This is the life! And yay cos Sahlene is on the radio and she's very ace. Earlier I heard both new Alcazar songs in a row! Also good news is I might be going to see Darren Hayes (who is stalking me!) at NRJ In The Park on Saturday, if only I could find out what park exactly it is in. Alcazar, Lambretta, Da Buzz, Ana and Dhani are there too. So exciting!
